Defoamers, antifoaming agents, and air release agents are chemical processing aids used to control or reduce foam during manufacturing processes. Although these terms are often used interchangeably, they function through different mechanisms.
Defoamers are foam-control agents added to a system to eliminate or reduce foam after it has already formed. They work by breaking down surface bubbles and destabilizing foam structures.
Antifoaming agents are added to a formulation to prevent the formation of foam before it appears. They act proactively to inhibit foam generation during processing.
Air release agents are designed to help remove entrained (trapped) air from a solution. They assist in releasing air bubbles and allowing them to rise to the surface, improving product clarity and stability.
